Intimate Form

This is part 1 of my dance minor project. It is based on improvisation, and that is all I will share. :)
Part 2 will be redone with costumes and more specific set design. Please comment with your response to the video and what you think it's about, as well as any suggestions you may have for part 2. Thanks for the input!

And thank you so much to all of my dancers!

  1. I like the organic quality or A, R, and girl #1. The ballet-focused dancers seemed more constrained. If that conflict is intentional then I would like to see a greater contrast for part 2. If not, then I think the sidewalk and steps may be placing linear constrictions on the dancers' movements. I enjoyed watching it, great work!

  2. I really enjoyed your use of outdoor shots to convey the openness and freedom of improvisation, and all the moving camera shots made it all feel very fluid and dynamic. The blending of ballet and hip-hop was completely seamless, and felt very natural. This was a fantastic compilation!

  3. Great Job. I love how one dancer finishes up where the next starts.

  4. Great job Amber! I love how the dancers movements blend into each other as each clip changes. It makes the dance flow as one despite each dancer doing their own improve. I also love the setting, how you chose different places around campus, because it allows me as a student to relate better to the dance. Overall, beautiful job once again!

  5. I enjoyed the transitions, the continuity that bridged the differences in the dancers and their individual dances. The strongest continuity was felt in the transitions around 1:06 and then again around 1:16. In part 2, I'd like to see each transition strongly matched. However if that was to be done, then that would place greater need on the set, the dancer and their dance being unique and distinct from the others. Also, the change in camera-angle later in the video was rather interesting. You might explore that a bit more...changing camera angle about during certain segments and maintaining that angle in subsequent sequences until you change it again. I really liked this and can't wait to see your end result, Amber. Keep up the awesome work!

  6. This is definitely a good start. The video has an engaging concept that will provide you with a strong base for further exploration of dancer/environment interaction.
Possibly in the next part, the dancers can become more in harmony with the environment, e.g., fluid movements like water in a stream, or graceful swaying of trees on a breezy day.

  7. The qualities of movement were so beautifully varied. The distinctions among the qualities of movement made the piece very engaging. The piece was also cohesive, tying all different styles of dance into one universal movement. The unity among the various styles of dance emphasized how all styles derive from the core of movement, establishing a lovely theme in the piece.
